Armored Warriors Clash By: Logan Magaw The drawing is called “Armored Warriors Clash”. It is called this because the drawing is about two iconic characters in armor from two different science fiction worlds (Marvel and StarWars) to face off against each other. The characters that I chose were Darth Vader and Iron Man. The reason I chose them is because they both play huge roles in their universe and are very powerful. Another reason I chose them is because they are both cyborgs. The battle between them is taking place on Hoth (a snowy planet in StarWars). I chose this place because it is a snowy planet and allowed for the main characters to stand-out. The principles of design used in this artwork are proportion, balance, emphasis, rhythm, and variety. First is proportion. Proportion is the size of objects body parts and how they relate to other objects in the artwork. I used proportion by drawing Iron Man bigger and Darth Vader smaller to show that Iron Man is in the foreground and Darth Vader is in the background. I also used proportion with Darth Vader’s lightsaber. His lightsaber is drawn in proportion to his body size. Lastly, proportion was used with the mountains. The mountains, although huge, were drawn proportionally smaller to show they are in the background. The second principle used is balance. Balance is when no one element stands out by itself. I used balance by maintaining proportions and keeping the values matching the proportions throughout the artwork. For instance, by adding color to Darth Vader, Iron Man, the mountains, and the sky no one element over powers the others. The next principle is emphasis. Emphasis is how a piece of art work draws attention to something. The emphasis is Darth Vader and Iron Man because they are on an icy plant. Darth Vader’s black suit and Iron Man’s red and gold suit allow them to stand out among the white snow of the plant. Additionally, rhythm is a principle used in this artwork. Rhythm is when a piece of artwork seems active. The way I used rhythm in my artwork is by having Darth Vader and Iron Man in menacing poses to show that they are about to fight. Also, Darth Vader has his lightsaber drawn ready to fight and Iron Man’s gauntlets are blue; thereby, showing they are firing up and he is ready to fight. Finally, variety was used as a principle. Variety is when you have a combination of different elements in your artwork. The way I used variety is by using multiple different colors, values, texture, and space throughout the artwork. Next I will discuss how I utilized these elements. First, I will discuss the element of color. Color is the way something looks made by the characteristics. For color, I used red and gold colored marker to define Iron Man. I also used red marker to define Darth Vader’s lightsaber and the buttons on his armor. Additionally, for Darth Vader I used black, gray, blue, and green markers to define his body and additional armor. Red colored pencil was utilized to add in defining Darth Vader’s lightsaber. White colored pencil was used to bring out Darth Vader and Iron Man’s highlights. Gray marker was used for parts of mountains. Lastly, a light blue marker was used for the sky. The use of all these colors helped create the characteristics found in the artwork. Second is the element of value. Value is showing shading or the lightness/darkness of a color. It is used to show depth or suggest a mood. Value can be seen in the contrasting colors in Darth Vader’s light saber to show that is glowing and ready for action, therefore showing mood. It can also be seen in the shading of the rocks in the mountain showing shadows which reflects the sun shining off the rocks. The footprints of Darth Vader’s also show value because it shows depth. Finally, the use of a white colored pencil to bring out the highlights in the two characters to show the sun shining on them shows use the element value. The use the element of texture was also used in the artwork. Texture of an element is how it feels to the touch or a sense of how it feels when viewed. I used texture in the back pieces of Iron Man’s armor to show that he not a flat smooth piece of metal. I also drew the creases in Darth Vader’s cape to show that it is moving. Additionally, the creases in Darth Vader’s suit were drawn to aid in showing the feel the suit and show it is not smooth. The last element used is space. Space is the amount of room around an object. There is positive space and negative space. Positive space is the space occupied by the objects. Negative space is the empty area around the object. Positive space is this artwork consist of Iron Man, Darth Vader, and the mountains. Negative space is seen in the sky and the snow. In conclusion, the Armored Warriors Clash exhibits lot of different principles of design and art elements. The artwork clearly shows how principle of design and art elements are utilized to convey subject matter, emotion, thought, and reaction. The artwork also shows how a mash-up can be easily done and two worlds can be brought together.
